Federal Minister of Health Visits NHCN

On July 5, 2016, Council and I were pleased to welcome the Federal Minister of Health to Norway House Cree Nation, along with an entourage that included Health Canada departmental and regional officials; MKO Grand Chief, Sheila North Wilson; Churchill - Keewatinook Aski; MP, Niki Ashton; and The Pas MLA, Amanda Lathlin.

Council and I provided a tour of the Norway House Hospital as well as of our community, highlighting all of our recent development. Council and I had the opportunity to discuss our vision for NHCN, health service integration and our plans for the development of a new health centre of excellence. We are pleased with the significant investments announced by Minister Philpott, to improving existing health infrastructure, supports to mental health wellness and funds to move forward with the integration of health services.

Council and I were exceptionally pleased with significant investment made to implement Jordan's Principle and the announcement made by Minister Philpott alongside the late Jordan Anderson's family in NHCN. We commend the Ministers of Health and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada for making this joint announcement. It demonstrates their commitment to First Nations children, and that the enhancement of, and access to, health care services is a priority for the Federal Government. The implementation of Jordan's Principle has been long awaited, and is critical in ensuring that equitable health services are provided to First Nations children on-reserve.

We thank Minister Philpott for visiting NHCN and we look forward to working together with Health Canada to improve health services for the well being of our community and our region.
